Do you ever get the feeling that you don’t see your family often enough? During corona lockdowns, many people experienced this more intensely than usual. Video calls exploded in popularity as a means for friends and family to stay in touch. But not everyone is comfortable using digital technology. enna is on a mission to ease these people into the digital world. With Unzer as its payment partner, the startup has the right platform for a successful market launch.

Turning Digital Tech into a Tangible Experience

As our social lives become more and more digital, people who have difficulties using a smartphone, tablet, or computer find themselves at a disadvantage. Not only is it harder to access music, photos, and TV series, but it is also a challenge to keep in touch with relatives who live far away.

This was what made Jakob Bergmeier, co-founder of enna, decide to found the startup. “My grandmother complained that it was hard to stay in contact with the family as we communicated online more often” says Jakob. “So, I built a first prototype – and that’s how enna was born.”

The product consists of a docking station for a tablet device, an app, and a selection of credit-card-sized cards. These “enna cards” trigger specific actions on the tablet when they are placed on the docking station. “For example, if I want to call a family member, I simply place the corresponding card on the dock and the tablet will automatically start a video call,” explains co-founder Tim Haug. “The user doesn’t have to know how to unlock the device, use a touchscreen, or start an app. That makes every action much easier.”

In-App Purchases and Subscription Payments Made Simple

The enna cards can be used to watch TV shows, view photo albums, listen to podcasts and audiobooks, check the weather, or find local bus timetables – basically everything you can do on a tablet. This simplified, accessible product design opens up the digital world to people who previously had difficulties with the complexity of technology. At the same time, the enna app enables digital-savvy friends and family to order enna cards or create entirely new ones customised to meet the users’ specific needs.

We made a conscious decision to find a payment partner based in Germany and chose to collaborate with Unzer.

To make sure enna hit the ground running after its market launch, the startup needed a payment partner that would allow it to accept online payments for its enna cards. As the docking station is sold on a subscription basis, enna also needed a simple way to handle subscription payments. “We chose to partner with Unzer because the platform covers both one-off and subscription payments,” says Moritz Kutschera, one of enna’s three co-founders. “Data protection is also very important to us, and we store all data here in Germany. It therefore made sense to choose a payment provider based in Germany.”

Our app connects all family members. Shared features such as a news feed, a calendar, and an overview of previous orders are really beneficial for the family organisation and ensure that no one is excluded.

A Platform to Optimise Processes

After partnering with Unzer, enna now has a scalable payment solution to help it achieve its ambitious plans. In addition to the B2C model, the startup sees potential in B2B partnerships. “We believe our product could play an important role in digitising hospitals and care homes,” says Moritz. “With an enna docking station in each room, a few simple services would make it possible to optimise a considerable number of processes and help patients and residents to stay in contact with their family – no matter where they live.”

Thanks to its user-friendly design and subscription payment model, the enna dock could help improve processes in a wide variety of scenarios. Unzer payment solutions give the startup the flexibility it needs to grow even faster in the future.
