Berlin, 15.08.2024 - Unzer, a provider of payment and software solutions, is expanding its checkout system to include invoice and installment purchases as well as direct debit. This means that customers can also use the popular "Buy Now, Pay Later" (BNPL) solutions in-store without waiting or filling out documents.

Unzer takes over the risk

Retailers benefit from an average 10% increase in shopping baskets and fewer abandoned purchases. And they bear no risk. With the Unzer solution, they receive the purchase amount in full after the goods have been dispatched, and Unzer takes care of the entire process.

Another advantage is that Unzer uses a white-label approach for its BNPL offer. Unzer itself does not make an appearance but remains invisible in the background. All communication is handled in the brand identity and environment of the respective store, and retailers can design the subsequent correspondence as well as the checkout according to their wishes and in their own design. This strengthens the trust and loyalty of end customers and leads to a lower abandonment rate.

"By making BNPL possible in-store, we are offering retailers a secure solution to improve their customers' shopping experience and strengthen their business," says Pascal Beij, Unzer's Chief Commercial Officer.

Less data required

Unzer seamlessly integrates invoice and installment purchasing into the company's POS system. Customers can scan a QR code, enter their personal details, and select their preferred payment option. In the background, a powerful model checks the customer's credit rating in real-time. They can then choose from the various payment options and take their goods with them while the money is credited to the merchant.

In contrast to most other invoice and installment purchase solutions, Unzer even manages with less customer data. The reason: Unzer has been offering these payment methods in e-commerce for many years and can, therefore, draw on a wealth of data and experience. A responsible risk assessment protects consumers from over-indebtedness and reduces the risk of fraud, which in turn leads to a high acceptance rate.

Purchase on account is still Germans' second favorite payment method

nvoice and installment purchases, as well as direct debit, are long-established payment methods in Germany, but they are currently experiencing real hype under the English term "Buy Now, Pay Later." The name says it all: customers buy now but pay later. With just a few clicks, the purchase is completed, and the money is collected in full or in installments, while retailers receive the full sales price immediately.  A study published in May 2023 by the retail research institute EHI in Cologne shows just how high BNPL's potential is. According to the study, PayPal has overtaken purchases on account as the most popular payment method for the first time. However, almost one in four online purchases (23.8%) is still paid by invoice.
