New ESG strategy
Berlin, October 25, 2023: In an era where the push for sustainability and equality is more crucial than ever, Unzer, a company providing payment and commerce solutions, is setting a clear path for the years ahead. With a commitment to making the world a better place, Unzer is setting ambitious environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals that demonstrate how business can be a force for positive change. The aim is to be a pioneer of responsible business practices in the payments industry.
Max Steiger, Chief Compliance and Governance Officer at Unzer, says: “We feel it is our obligation to promote ethical and sustainable business practices. This is not only about our responsibility towards customers, employees, and owners, but especially regarding global challenges. Our ESG strategy embodies our ambition to run our business in line with environmental responsibility, diversity, and ethical guidelines.”
So, what are the pillars of Unzer's vision for a better future exactly?
We want to run our company in harmony with ecological responsibility, diversity, and ethical guidelines. As part of the global community, we see this as our societal obligation.

Unzer is steadfast in its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. The goal is clear: to be completely climate-neutral by 2030. To achieve this, the company is already taking significant steps, such as using green electricity for its German office buildings or avoiding domestic flights when travelling. In the years to come, Unzer will reduce electricity consumption by over 80%. Moreover, the company plans to invest in electric mobility and promote the use of public transport among its employees.
In the realm of social inclusivity, Unzer is making a profound difference. We have implemented a culture that goes beyond words – it's about fostering an environment where open feedback and participation are at the core. To solidify this commitment, we have established a clear set of values, leadership principles, and a code of conduct.
Unzer is also very well positioned in diversity and currently employs people from 55 countries. Furthermore, Unzer has set market-leading gender equality goals. The company is aiming to increase the proportion of women in our workforce to 45% by 2025, with the goal of having 30% of female managers. Unzer’s ultimate aspiration is to reach gender parity by 2027. Steffi Hohenstatt, Vice President HR at Unzer, comments: “We’ve been recognizing the need for more women in tech for a long time and we are fully dedicated to making this ambitious goal a reality.” Unzer is also enhancing the professional and personal development of its employees, with plans to implement detailed career paths and expand existing training programs by 2024.
Unzer takes governance seriously and is committed to preventing actions that could harm the organization, its employees, or stakeholders. Max Steiger says: “We firmly believe that companies have a pivotal role in addressing the challenges of our time. With our planned initiatives and objectives, we are demonstrating that profitability and sustainability can coexist harmoniously. We invite other companies to embark on this journey with us, recognizing that only through environmental responsibility, diversity, inclusion, and ethical behavior can we collectively create a better future for all.”
