Unzer will be supporting the men's rugby sevens team of the German Rugby Federation as its new sponsor. The team, which is also known as the "Wolfpack", will be taking part in the two tournaments of the World Rugby Sevens Series in Spain for the first time with Unzer as its jersey sponsor.
As a sport, rugby is dynamic, action-packed and fast-paced. These are characteristics that also apply to the constantly changing world of payment. A partnership between Unzer, one of the leading payment providers in Europe, and the rugby sevens team of the German Rugby Federation therefore makes perfect sense. The Unzer logo is set to adorn the players' jerseys for the first time at the two tournaments of the World Rugby Sevens Series to be held in Spain. These will take place in Malaga (January 21 to 23) and Seville (January 28 to 30). Sevens rugby is a version of rugby union in which each team has 7 players instead of the usual 15. However, the matches are played on the same pitches. This leads to even more intensive, faster and higher scoring games. It should therefore come as no surprise that this is a genuine growth sport that is enjoying ever greater popularity. Thanks to the shorter playing time (just 7 minutes per half, increased to 10 minutes per half for the final), it is also possible to complete an entire tournament in just a few days. The World Rugby Sevens Series is a great example of this. Since the German team is stepping in as a substitute, a new sponsor had to be found at short notice. This is where Unzer came in.
"We are delighted to have Unzer come on board as our new partner with the concept we have developed. Unzer not only identifies with our sport and its values, but is also keen to work with us on increasing its popularity," comments Florian Hartmann, Director of Structure and Development at the German Rugby Federation. "The fact that Unzer is taking this step at a time when a great deal of uncertainty remains in terms of regular international sporting fixtures is truly admirable. This makes Unzer even more valuable to us as a partner, and we look forward to expanding this partnership further in future." By participating in the World Rugby Sevens Series, the German Rugby Federation team is underlining its international ambitions. The series is held every year and includes several tournaments. The "Wolfpack" last took part in the event held in autumn 2021 in Vancouver and Edmonton. After finishing 9th in Vancouver, the team did even better in Edmonton - delivering impressive performances against teams including Great Britain, Hong Kong and Ireland - and ultimately defeating the USA in a dramatic match to take 5th place. As such, not only are the European champions from 2019 blessed with a great deal of potential, they are hungry for success and keen to take their place among the sport's top teams.
"Companies have a social responsibility, so we are also keen to show our commitment in the sporting arena. The German national rugby sevens team brings together speed, teamwork and strength – a combination that really speaks to us. We wish the team every success," comments Sebastian Wenzel, Vice President Group Marketing at Unzer, describing the cooperation.
The tournament in Malaga starts with the group phase on Friday, January 21. The German team will be facing Australia, Ireland and Japan here. Below is an overview of the match times for the group phase:
